Nexus Card Remote Interview

Despite disrupted travel in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, Nexus Card membership has grown to more than 10 million total members across the four different trusted traveler programs. The pandemic may have even led to an increase in applications—CBP processed 3.5 million applications for the 2021 fiscal year, which is the most applications it has ever received in a year, according to the Director of the trusted traveler programs, Michael Millich. Out of the approximately 10 million members across the four different programs, a majority of those, around 8 million, are Nexus Card members.

During the pandemic, CBP began conducting Nexus Card interviews remotely via Zoom. There have been more than 40,000 remote interviews thus far. The availability of Zoom interviews is expected to increase more and more as the agency invests in training new officials to work through the backlog of existing new and renewal applications caused by unprecedented demand in membership during the pandemic.

CBP is also investing heavily in Nexus Card NextGen, which includes innovations that will further streamline and expedite the travel experience for arrivals to the U.S. After COVID-19, there were heavy investments in touchless technology. Thus far, 80% of the kiosks around the U.S. have now been updated with this new touchless technology, and by the end of the year they will have 100% of all kiosks updated. These updated kiosks will also have receiptless processing with newly advanced facial comparison technology. The touchless technology pilot led to 94% faster processing than the original kiosks. Older machines processed each arrival at around 3.5 seconds, but with the new touchless kiosks it only takes around 45 to 60 seconds.
